How To Prepare For My Ultrasound

Listed below are the PREPARATIONS for ALL ultrasound examinations: please read the one that corresponds to your booking. If you are unsure, or the exam you have been sent for isn't on the list - then please contact us via email to ask!

ABDOMEN

We need a 6 hour fast for this one (this is to fill the Gallbladder up and reduce the amount of bowel gas that’s in the abdomen) – nil by mouth (paediatric abdomen too!). Sips of water are fine along with any medications you need to take. If you are diabetic, we suggest booking an early or late appointment, depending upon how well controlled your diabetes is.

PELVIC/EARLY OBSTETRIC

Please fill your bladder (as full as you can manage) prior to the appointment. We recommend emptying your bladder one hour and fifteen minutes before your appointment time, drinking one litre of water and then holding for the exam. If you are having issues with your bladder, just do your best to fill it up – often with pelvic ultrasound examinations, we may perform an internal/transvaginal examination for better clarity, in which case you will be able to empty your bladder.

RENAL (KUB)

Please fill your bladder as full as possible for your examination time!! We recommend emptying the bladder one hour and fifteen minutes prior to the exam, then drinking 1 litre of water – and hold. Again, if you have issues with holding your bladder, please don’t stress!! We can always keep you at the practice until such a time that you are able to fill your bladder up again.

VASCULAR

For Aorta/Leg arteries and Renal arteries/MALS etc, please fast for 6 hours. For all other vascular exams (DVT, CAROTID, ARM ARTERIES, CHRONIC VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY ETC) – No preparation required. Just wear comfortable, easy to move/remove clothing for the exam.

MUSCULOSKELETAL

No preparations, just comfortable, easy to remove clothing.

SMALL PARTS (thyroid, testes, lumps)

No preparation at all!

PAEDIATRIC Spine, hips, or head

Please bring milk/ have the ability to play with/ bribe/ soothe baby/ child during the exam. We are a paediatric friendly environment with an understanding sonographer (who is a father himself) and will do our best to make it a fun and friendly scan, involving your child where we can and making the experience as stress free as possible.

Please feel free to ask any questions via email in the meantime, but we look forward to welcoming you for your Ultrasound soon!
